Protecting and Caring for Those in Need

A recent article from the Israeli news indicates that one in every three children in Israel live below the poverty line. This is a very sad report and makes us here at The Joshua Fund desirous to increase our efforts to bless those who are suffering from need.

In the Old Testament, it is apparent that the Lord was serious about protecting and caring for the poor, so much so that God’s law required that the corners of the fields were not to be harvested, but to be left for the poor and that the fallen fruit from the vineyard was to also be left for those in need (Leviticus 23:22 & Leviticus 19:10). When the requirements of the law were fulfilled by the coming of Christ, it did not negate God’s desire to see that the needy were cared for.  In fact, Jesus’ very direct exhortation is found in Mathew 25, starting in the 31st verse, where He lays out the expectations:  to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, give water to the thirsty, visit those in prison and care for the stranger in the Land. And this exhortation from Jesus Himself is the very heart of what we seek to do.

As we begin 2012, through the generosity of so many, The Joshua Fund is feeding thousands of families each month, as well as distributing clothing from our warehouse to those who are in need through distribution centers throughout the Land. This is also why we care for the widows in elderly care facilities and orphans living in orphanages, as well as Holocaust survivors and strangers in the land.

With the help of God and your prayers, we look forward to 2012 and what The Lord will enable us to do to be obedient to His Word.

As I write this, it has been 32 hours since all the cell phones in Israel woke us up at 3 am with a very unusual message: We are in a State of Extreme National Emergency. Stay near a place of shelter. All gatherings, educational and work activities are cancelled until further notice. We were told to check that our bomb shelters were prepared and stocked with food and water.
